So instead of writing one long post about my trip like an essay, I am going to split my trip into five seperate posts. Anyways, this trip was so fun! I have never travelled that far with a friend today and let me tell you, I prefer it over than travelling with family! Haha.
Chicago was beautiful and would go back sometime again soon. The architecture was so rad and they had some such awesome structures and statues… the most random ones too. ANYWAYS here it goes….
The day started off super early, at about 3AM. I didn’t get much sleep the night before because I still had to scramble around and pack and run errands. My mum and I picked up Monica at 4 and arrived at the airport at 430. Then off we went to customs, the line was SO LONG. I haven’t rode on a plane since 9-11 so I didn’t really know what to expect. when I got to the part where you take off your shoes and put your bags through, the customs person decided that they picked me to do a “random extra search” and in front of everyone they took out EVERYTHING in my bag, searched the bottom of my bare feet, checked all my pockets and did swab test on everything. I am still convinced it was because I was brown. Haha. Then Monica and I waited for our flight and eventually got on. Monica slept like a baby but I just couldn’t.. I tossed and turned but gave up and talked to the girl beside me. She was pretty rad and before you know it we had arrived. We got off, figured out how to get to our hostel (their CTA system was kind of confusing.. haha) but we figured it out and after about an hour, we made it to our hostel.
It wasn’t that bad, but man was it hot! The window didn’t open so we were breathing in the same circulated air over and over and over. We had to keep the fan on when we slept but it didn’t really do us any justice. It was clean and all but honestly, I probably wouldn’t stay at that hostel again in the summer… wayyy too hot. And some nights Monica and I couldn’t sleep at all because of the stuffy-ness. Anyways, after we dropped our luggage off we decided to explore the city and check out the “magnificent mile”. But not until we ate a Chicago hot dog, so we went to a rad place called “Hot Doug’s”. It was AMAZING.
We got downtown and just walked around the bit… then we noticed a whole bunch of people on the other side of this bridge thing so we decided to check it out. We went underground through this tunnel and we realized it was a beach. We went up the stairs expecting some shithole but… it definitely wasn’t what we expected. It was AMAZING. It looked like the beaches in California. There were palm trees, the sand was actually soft (compared to Vancouvers) and it was NICE.
Behind us was Chicago’s buildings.
(If you look carefully, you can see the Sears tower… or whatever the fuck it’s called now.. haha)
Monica and I walked around the beach for awhile, dodged volleyballs and ignored hecklers (“hey babyyy”, “Canon is better”, “where you mami’s going?”) and found these two guys with a bonfire. We wondered aloud if that was legal and one of them piped up, “as long as you don’t get caught”. So we just started talking to them.
One of them reminded me and kind of looked like my friend Jordan.
His other friend was kind of cute and insisted that we took a picture together. I ruined the picture by making a stupid face.
He wouldn’t stop holding on to me which was kind of gross considering he had a soggy cast on. Monica asked them if they had any “candy” which they hadn’t but insisted that we attend a house party where there would be some. The house party where they were holding it was used in some Harrison Ford film or something. We were tempted to go but we had to wake up super early tomorrow for Lollapalooza and they told us they were using us to make their ex-girlfriends jealous. So we decided after that, that was our cue to leave. We exchanged numbers and went our seperate ways.
So after we left the beach we continued to shop.
We went to most of the stores on the mile. We went to Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, H&M, Borders, that creepy American Girl store
(Have no idea why those creepy dolls are so popular and expensive)
And Forever 21 where were saw some tranny mannequins…
Then we went on a hunt for a Popeye’s. Monica loves fried food and she wanted to try Popeye’s when we were in Chicago because apparently they don’t have any on the west coast. We asked pretty much EVERYONE (one person was like, “Popeye’s? Isn’t that for black people?” haha) and we walked by one, hallejujah!
I’m not really a big fan of fried foods so I decided to skip out on the meal but I did have some of the biscuit.. which wasn’t too bad by the way. Pretty buttery…
Then after that fattening food we decided we needed to go for a walk. We went to Millenium Park in search for the “giant bean” Monica’s manager told her so much about. We walked there and saw all the amazing structures…
And after walking up and down the park fifty billion times we found the giant bean.
We walked around the streets a bit more and decided it was now time to try Chicago’s famous deep dish pizza. It took us forever to find a pizza place but we finally found one. We ordered a pitcher of beer and waited about 45 minutes for our pizza to come. While we waited for our pizza we met these two pretty hefty black guys. We talked to them about EVERYTHING and they were pretty rad. They were eating the pizza and sweating and they couldn’t even finish their pizza! Haha, and their pizza was the same size we ordered! So we know what we had in store. Haha, they were from Baltimore and were in town for an orchestra they were in. They were pretty rad guys, and later that night he sent me a text saying I had pretty cool swagger… whatever that means. Anyways, after they left our pizza arrived and man was it huge… and cheesy.
I am a big fan of cheese so to me the pizza was pretty rad. Monica is not a big fan of cheese so she didn’t really like the pizza. We did manage to finish the whole pizza though.. which was kind of embarrassing considering those two bigger guys couldn’t finish that! haha
Then after, it was getting late so we decided to head home because we had to wake up super early tomorrow for our first day of LOLLAPALOOZA!
